Injection Tips
Your doctor or diabetes educator will show you how to give yourself an injection. You should also carefully review
all the information and instructions that come with your insulin and diabetes supplies before giving yourself
an injection. (There are also injection tutorials on this website to help.) Giving
an injection is simple, but it does take practice. Talk
to your doctor or other people who take insulin for support during this time.
| 10 Tips for Success | |
| 1. Make sure you are taking the right insulin and dose at the right time | |
| 2. Check the expiration date on your insulin | |
| 3. If you are using "cloudy" insulin, gently mix it well before using | |
| 4. Clean the top of the insulin cartridge or vial with an alcohol swab each time | |
| 5. Make sure the injection site is clean | |
| 6. Talk to your healthcare team about which needle is best for you | |
| 7. Go through the skin quickly to minimize any discomfort | |
| 8. Go straight in through the skin, not at an angle | |
| 9. People who are very thin may use short needles to allow them to go straight in without going too deep | |
| 10. Consult a member of your healthcare team with questions | |
A note about used needles
Most states require that you store used needles and pen needles in a hard container. An empty liquid detergent bottle is a good example (per your local regulations). You can also buy "sharps containers" at most pharmacies. Check with your local health department to confirm the rules where you live.
