Taken when you eat meals, Humalog (insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]) closely mimics the body's own insulin at mealtime, offering you convenience, control, and flexibility. Humalog is absorbed quickly and starts working within minutes to help lower your blood sugar. Humalog is for use in people with diabetes to help control high blood sugar and should be used with a longer-acting insulin, except when used in combination with oral medication (sulfonylureas) in people with type 2 diabetes.
Only your healthcare provider will know if Humalog is right for you. Be sure to discuss your individual needs, feelings, and options with your healthcare team when deciding to start mealtime insulin.
Importance of mealtime control
Your blood sugar targets include goals for different times:
- before meals (if before breakfast, this is called your "fasting blood glucose")
- 1-2 hours after meals (also called your "postprandial blood glucose")
- your average blood sugar over the past several months (called your "A1C")
If your blood sugar before meals is within target, but your A1C value is above target, your blood sugar after meals may be going too high. Talk with your healthcare provider about checking your blood sugar after meals to make sure it is within your target range.
Flexible dosing
With Humalog, you can enjoy improved blood sugar control with "dose and eat" convenience. Humalog can be taken within 15 minutes before or immediately after a meal. This means you can better manage your diabetes even when you run into unexpected delays or schedule changes. Humalog is also approved for use in insulin pumps in adults with type 1 diabetes.
Available in convenient insulin pens
Humalog is available in a variety of prefilled and reusable insulin pens. These pens can be used just about anywhere — at work, in restaurants, or at a picnic. Before use, carefully read the User Manual provided with each pen and the Patient Information provided with the pen or Humalog insulin cartridges.
